In partnership with Southwestern Regional Day Report Center, the Fresh Start Community garden is located in Hamlin, WV.
The Center, however, serves 3 counties: Lincoln, Logan, and Mingo, working with populations that are in recovery -- The Fresh Start program helps individuals overcome barriers and achieve recovery, while rebuilding with the community and community resources such as the gardens, as well as, obtaining career development and education opportunities.
All produce grown by Fresh Start participants is given back to those in our communities who face food insecurity and to our partnership food pantries, Hungry Lambs Food Initiative in Logan County and the Food Pantry in Lincoln County. They also work closely with LCOC in Hamlin to provide fresh produce to those in their seniors programming.

Each year, several families learn how to plant, maintain, harvest, and even how to prepare the food grown. The produce grown is also used for kids markets, food pantries, and given to kids and elders throughout the growing season to provide food for those with limited resources to buy fresh produce.
The garden donated approximately 19,000 lbs. of produce throughout the tri-state in 2024.
Heather and Kandi work for WVU Research Corp. in partnership with the Local Exchange and with funding provided by the SNAP-ED program. For more info, contact Kandi Messinger by email.
